The  British Pendulum Tester is a dynamic pendulum impact-type instrument. It is designed based on the fundamental principle that the loss of potential energy of the pendulum is equal to the work done by the rubber slider at the end of the pendulum arm in overcoming pavement friction while sliding across the road surface. This principle enables accurate evaluation of pavement surface friction characteristics and skid resistance performance.

I. Product Introduction

The British Pendulum Tester is developed and manufactured by our company in accordance with the standard JTG 3450-2019 Field Test Methods of Highway Subgrade and Pavement Engineering (T 0964-2008 Test Method for Pavement Friction Coefficient Using the Pendulum Tester), with reference to international standards including ASTM E303, EN 13036-4, and BS 812-114.

II. Structure

1. Base: The base consists of T-shaped legs, leveling screws, and a spirit level. It is used for leveling and supporting the instrument.

2. Column: The column consists of the vertical post, lifting mechanism, guide rod, and instrument handle. It is used for adjusting the height and fixing the position of the pendulum head.

3. Release Switch: The release switch is installed on the cantilever and is used to hold the pendulum arm in the horizontal position and release it for free swinging.

4. Steering System: The steering system includes the fastening handle, pendulum shaft, steering joint, and bearing. It connects the pendulum assembly, fixes its position, and ensures free swinging within the pendulum plane.

5. Indication System: The indication system consists of a pointer felt ring, pressing cover, pointer adjustment nut, and graduated dial. The pointer directly indicates the pendulum value.

6. Pendulum Head: The pendulum head consists of upper and lower joints, pendulum arm, spring, lever, lifting handle, hammer housing, slider, and rubber slider (76 mm × 25.4 mm × 6.35 mm). It provides a specified torque around the pendulum pivot and applies a specified pressure to the pavement surface. The front-to-rear and left-to-right moments are balanced, making it a measurement standard for evaluating pavement friction coefficients.

III. Main Technical Parameters

1. Pendulum mass: 1500±30g; Pendulum center of gravity distance: 410±5mm

2. Static pressure of the rubber sheet on the road surface: 2263g

3. The number of times the pendulum is released freely from a 5-degree incline until it stops swinging should be no less than 70 times.

4. The distance between the outer edge of the rubber sheet and the center of the road swing is 510mm.

5. The total weight of the instrument is approximately 12kg.

IV. Instrument Maintenance, Storage and Transportation

1. The British Pendulum Tester is a precision instrument. Special care must be taken to protect all mechanical components to ensure testing accuracy. If the user is unfamiliar with the structure of the instrument, the operation manual should be carefully read before use to understand the structure, functions, and operating procedures of each component. Except for the parts that are designed to be moved or removed, no other components of the instrument should be disassembled without authorization.

2. After use, wipe all parts clean and pack them back into their case. The instrument should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated room free from acidic and corrosive volatile substances.

3. Except during testing or other special circumstances, the instrument should be kept in its packaging box for all transport.

4. During long-distance transportation, the instrument should be placed in a transport case and protected from sudden impacts and excessive vibrations during loading, unloading, and transport.

Appendix:

(I) Calibration of the Pendulum Friction Coefficient Tester

The pendulum tester must be calibrated at least once a year. If there is significant damage or change, it should be calibrated immediately. For calibration, please return the pendulum tester to the original calibrator.
