Fine Aggregate Methylene Blue Test Equipment Guide

2026-07-30

The Methylene Blue Test of Fine Aggregate is an important method used to evaluate the content of harmful clay particles and fine impurities in aggregate. By measuring the Methylene Blue Value (MBV), this test helps assess the cleanliness and quality of fine aggregates, which is essential for ensuring the performance and durability of asphalt mixtures and construction materials.

To obtain accurate and reliable test results, appropriate laboratory equipment is required. The Fine Aggregate Methylene Blue Test Equipment mainly includes an impeller mixer, pipettes, beakers, filter paper, and other accessories. Among them, the impeller mixer plays a key role in ensuring uniform dispersion of the sample and stable test conditions.

According to the test standard, the following test equipment is required for the Fine Aggregate Methylene Blue Test:

1. Pipettes:

One 5 mL pipette and one 2 mL pipette are required.

2. Impeller Mixer:

The mixer shall have an adjustable rotational speed and be capable of meeting the requirements of (600 ± 60) rpm and (400 ± 40) rpm. It shall be equipped with 3 or 4 blades, with a blade diameter of 75 mm ± 10 mm.

3. Oven:

A forced-air drying oven with a constant temperature of 105°C ± 5°C, meeting the requirements specified in T0302, Clause 2.4.

4. Balance:

A balance with a weighing capacity of not less than 1 kg and a readability of not more than 0.1 g; and a balance with a weighing capacity of not less than 100 g and a readability of not more than 0.01 g.

5. Test Sieves:

Square-hole test sieves with aperture sizes of 0.15 mm and 2.36 mm, meeting the requirements specified in T0302, Clause 2.1.

6. Container:

A container with a depth of more than 250 mm, designed to prevent aggregate particles from splashing out during the washing process.

7. Glass Volumetric Flask: A 1 L glass volumetric flask.

8. Timer:

A timer with a measuring range of not less than 48 hours and an accuracy of 0.1 s.

9. Glass Rods:

Two glass rods with a diameter of 8 mm and a length of 300 mm.

10. Thermometers:

A thermometer with a measuring range of 0–100°C and a scale division of 0.1°C.

A thermometer with a measuring range of 0–200°C and a scale division of 1°C.

11. Beaker: A 1000 mL beaker.

12. Quantitative Filter Paper:

Medium-speed quantitative filter paper conforming to “Chemical Analysis Filter Paper” (GB/T 1914), with a specification of 202.

13. Others:

Metal trays, brushes, water, and other necessary accessories.
